About Ryan
Ryan Byers is an Idaho-based author, hiker, trail runner, mountaineer, and outdoor enthusiast based in Pocatello. From quick after-work hikes in the foothills to long days in Idaho’s high country, Ryan’s work is built around one simple idea: helping more people explore the outdoors with better information and more confidence.
That goal led him to create Pocatello Trail Guide, a practical resource for hikers, runners, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the trails around Pocatello and the surrounding area. The guide brings together route descriptions, maps, elevation profiles, and helpful details designed to make planning your next outing easier.
About Pocatello Trail Guide
Pocatello has one of the most underrated trail systems in Idaho. Within minutes of town, you can be climbing into the foothills, winding through sagebrush, following creekside paths, or looking out over the Portneuf Valley from a ridge you may have driven past a hundred times without noticing.
That accessibility is part of what makes Pocatello special. You do not need to plan a major expedition to have a real outdoor experience here. Sometimes all you need is an open afternoon and a decent pair of shoes.
Like many people who grew up in the area, I spent plenty of time hiking the local favorites whenever I could. But unless you go out of your way to explore new routes, it is easy for the same few trails to get all the attention. But when I first started exploring the area more seriously, I realized the information was often scattered. Some routes were well known. Others were passed around through word of mouth, old maps, trail apps, or half-remembered directions from someone who had been there once. I wanted to create the kind of guide I wished existed: clear, practical, local, and easy to use.
Pocatello Trail Guide is designed to help you find the right trail for the day, whether you are looking for a short walk, a scenic overlook, a challenging climb, or a new route close to home.
Beyond the Book
Ryan also shares hiking videos, trip reports, route resources, and outdoor writing through his websites and YouTube channel. His goal is to make Idaho’s trails and mountains more approachable without taking away the sense of adventure that makes them worth exploring in the first place.
Whether you are new to Pocatello, just getting into hiking, or looking for another trail to add to your regular rotation, the goal of Pocatello Trail Guide is simple: help you get outside, explore more confidently, and discover just how much is waiting right here at home.
